To prevent a diving mask from fogging, you can use several tried-and-true methods. Here are the most common and effective techniques:

1. Spit Method

  • Step 1: Before entering the water, spit into the inside of the mask.
  • Step 2: Rub the saliva around the lens with your finger.
  • Step 3: Rinse the mask lightly with water (but don’t wash all the saliva off).
  • Why it works: Saliva forms a thin film that prevents condensation, which is the primary cause of fogging.

2. Commercial Anti-Fog Sprays

  • Step 1: Apply a few drops or sprays of anti-fog solution to the inside of the mask lens.
  • Step 2: Spread it evenly using your finger.
  • Step 3: Rinse lightly if the instructions recommend it.
  • Why it works: These sprays are specifically formulated to prevent condensation by creating a protective coating on the glass.

3. Toothpaste (for new masks)

  • Step 1: Apply a small amount of non-abrasive, white toothpaste (not gel) to the inside of the mask lens.
  • Step 2: Rub the toothpaste around with a soft cloth or your finger in circular motions.
  • Step 3: Rinse the mask thoroughly to remove all the toothpaste.
  • Why it works: New masks often have a protective coating left from the manufacturing process, which causes fogging. Toothpaste helps remove this coating.

4. Burning the Mask (with caution!)

  • Step 1: Use a lighter to heat the inside of the mask lens (the glass only, not the silicone).
  • Step 2: Move the flame around until you see a light layer of smoke forming on the lens.
  • Step 3: Let the mask cool, then wash it thoroughly with water and soap to remove the residue.
  • Why it works: This method burns off the thin silicone layer left from the manufacturing process that causes fogging. Be careful to avoid damaging the mask’s silicone or frame.

5. Rinsing in Water During a Dive

  • If your mask starts to fog while you’re diving, you can flood the mask slightly with water and swish it around to clear the fog. Afterward, clear the mask by exhaling through your nose to remove the water.
  • Why it works: The water washes away the condensation, temporarily solving the problem.

6. Pre-Dive Mask Preparation

  • Step 1: Before each dive, make sure the mask is clean. Dirt, oils, and salt from previous dives can cause fogging.
  • Step 2: Rinse the mask thoroughly with fresh water before applying any anti-fog method.

7. Avoid Touching the Inside of the Lens

  • Fingerprints and oils from your skin can encourage fogging, so avoid touching the inside of the lens after cleaning it or applying an anti-fog solution.

Regular Maintenance

  • After each dive, clean your mask with fresh water and store it properly. Over time, repeated cleanings will keep the mask free from residue that could lead to fogging.

These methods help ensure that your mask stays clear, allowing you to focus on your dive rather than dealing with foggy lenses!
